In anticipation of the Feast of our Lady of Rosary ( October 7 )

On the 7th of October we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Rosary.
This Feast was instituted in honor of the great and important Victory over the forces of Islam at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, which was won because of the many rosaries prayed to our Blessed Mother. Pope Leo XIII added to the Litany of Loreto the invocation 'Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, pray for us' and in 1961 the title of this Feast became Our Lady of the Rosary.
The Victory was brought about through the devout recitation of the Holy Rosary. In thanksgiving for another Victory over the same foes in Hungary in 1715, the Feast was extended to the whole Church.
In the course of centuries the Rosary has been a source of abundant blessings. In her apparitions at Lourdes, France, in 1858, and again at Fatima, Portugal, in 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary urged Catholics to pray the Rosary frequently in order to bring about the conversion of sinners and a lasting world peace.
Let us resolve to say our Rosary every day! Besides being a beautiful tribute of love to our Heavenly Mother, it will be our support and joy in life and our consolation at the hour of death.
Every rosary we pray is a rose in the basket of our Beloved Mother that she offers to Our Father in heaven, interceding for our spiritual and temporal welfare.

Novena to the Guardian Angels ( September 23 - October 1 )

~With love & gratitude to our Guardian Angels~
O Holy Guardian Angel, whom God, by the effect of His goodness and His tender regard for my spiritual welfare, has charged thee with the care of my conduct, and who assists me in all my wants and comforts me in all my afflictions, who supports me when I am discouraged and continually obtains for me new favors, I return thee profound thanks, and I earnestly beseech thee, O most amiable Protector, to continue thy charitable care and defense of me against the malignant attacks of all my enemies. Keep me away from all occasions of sin. Obtain for me the grace of listening attentively to thy holy inspirations and of faithfully putting them into practice. In particular, I implore thee to obtain for me this prayer petition which I earnestly ask for by this novena.
[here our prayer intention ]
Protect me in all the temptations and trials of this life, but more especially at the hour of my death, and do not leave me until thou hast conducted me into the Divine Presence of my Creator in the Mansions of everlasting happiness. Amen.

O most faithful companion, appointed by God Almighty to be my Guardian, and who never leaves my side, how shall I thank thee for thy faithfulness and love and for the benefits which thou have obtained for me!
Thou watch over me when I sleep; thou comfort me when I am sad; thou avert the dangers that threaten me and warn me of those to come; thou withdraw me from sin and inspire me to good; thou exhort me to penance when I fall and reconcile me to God.  I beg thee not to leave me.   Comfort me in adversity, restrain me in prosperity, defend me in danger, and assist me in temptations, lest at any time I fall beneath them. Offer up in the sight of the Divine Majesty my prayers and petitions, and all my works of piety, and help me to persevere in grace until I come to everlasting life. Amen.

Today Double Feast of Saint Thomas of Villanova, Bishop and Confessor

Among the many Saints, celebrated on account of their virtues and miracles, who adorned the Catholic Church at a period when a great number of heretics revolted against her, one of the most famous was Saint Thomas of Villanova
Saint Thomas led a holy life, and yet feared he would not be able to justify himself before God.

Oremus/ Let us pray :

Prayer to Saint Thomas of Villanova

Most glorious Saint Thomas, pattern of Christian perfection and perfect model of priestly zeal, by that glory which as a reward of thy merits, has been granted thee in heaven, turn thine eyes of mercy upon us and come to our assistance before the throne of the Most High. While living on earth thou didst have as thy chief characteristic the very charity of Christ. Armed with this thou didst spend thine entire life in giving aid to the wretched, counsel to the doubtful, and consolation to the afflicted; thou didst draw back to the paths of virtue those who had gone astray, thus bringing to Jesus Christ the souls redeemed by His Precious Blood. Now that thou art so powerful in heaven, continue thy task of giving help to all and be our watchful protector, so that, through thine intercession, being delivered from all temporal misfortunes and confirmed in our faith and in love, we may be victors in our struggle with the powers of evil and may merit with thee to praise and bless our Lord through all eternity. Amen.

For the love of God, Who made thee so glorious in grace and power, and for the love of the Mary the Holy Mother of Jesus, the Queen of the Angels, be pleased to hear my humble prayer. Thou know the value of my soul in the eyes of God. May no stain of evil ever disfigure its beauty. Help me to conquer the evil spirits that tempt me. I desire to imitate thy loyalty to God and Holy Mother Church and thy great love for God and people.
And since thou are God's messenger for the care of His people, I entrust to thee this special request: (here our prayer intention ).
Saint Michael, the Archangel since thou are, by the will of the Creator, the powerful intercessor of Christians, I have great confidence in thy prayers. I earnestly trust that if it is God's holy will, my petition will be granted.
Pray for me Saint Michael, the Archangel and also for those I love. Protect us in all dangers of body and soul. Help us in our daily needs. Through thy powerful intercession, may we live a holy life, die a happy death and reach Heaven where we may praise and love God with thee forever. Amen.

Today is the Double Major Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

In the Latin Roman Rite this feast is celebrated on September 14th each year to celebrate the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on which Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior, died.
Historians record that the true cross was unearthed by the Empress Saint Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine the Great in the year 326. With Constantine as emperor his mother had the funds and the visa so-to-speak to conduct an extensive expedition for the true cross for it was the sign of the cross in the sky that enabled her son to be victorious - "In hoc signo vinces." Though she was nearly 80 years old her mission was to uncover Christ's cross so that all the world could give it the reverence and veneration it deserved. On arriving in Jerusalem there was no visible sign of any evidence because the heathens had constructed pagan temples over anything Christian to show their disdain.

This was the signal to Helena where to look and so she sought out where stones had been piled high, leading her to many discoveries including the sepulchre where Jesus was buried, finding the tools of torture as well after she had the pagan temples destroyed. In the process her expedition nearby uncovered three crosses with the nail holes still visible and, after more digging, discovered the crude rough iron nails that had pierced the hands and feet of our Savior, as well as the two thieves. Helena grappled with which of the three was the true cross and sought out the holy bishop Saint Macarius, who suggested to Helena that the three crosses be taken to a very influential lady who lay very ill in the city. His reasoning and faith was that God would reveal which was the true cross when it touched and healed the sick woman. Helena did just this as Macarius prayed for the miracle they sought. God answered their prayers when the third cross was placed near the woman after the first two had failed. Almost immediately the woman regained full health. Helena was so overcome with joy and gratitude that she ordered a church be built on the spot where she discovered the cross and placed the major portion of the cross in an elegant silver casing inside the church for protection, entrusting it to St. Macarius. Because this pine wood cross was shredding some, Helena took a healthy piece back with her to Rome, placing it in another church she had delegated to be built there which was renamed the Church of Santa Croce in Rome where it is still preserved today. Helena died peacefully in her son Constantine's arms on August 18, 326.

St. Cyril of Jerusalem, Macarius' successor, stated that pieces of the true cross were spreading throughout the world which later confirmed what St. Paulinus of Nola wrote: though pieces of the sacred wood were slivered off the main cross almost daily and given to the devout, the cross seemed never to diminish in size. Today these relics are indeed on every continent and we have personally seen many times crosses that contain a sliver of the true cross. As a relic the sliver of the cross is often carried beneath a covered canopy in procession. When it is presented for exposition it is customary to genuflect in veneration, and kissing the relic is a total indication of respect and veneration.

Oremus / let us pray :

O Holy God, Who dost gladden us this day by the annual solemnity of the exaltation of the Holy Cross, grant, we beseech Thee, that, as we have known its mystery on earth, we may deserve in heaven the reward which it had purchased. Through the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, forever and ever. Amen.
